Occasionally, we encounter special light-blocking problems that require a solution beyond the physical properties of window film. Usually the situation is one where there is a desire for flexibility or variable control of light. Since film is permanently fixed in place and doesn’t change in what it does, there are cases where an adjustable window treatment is also needed. Of the options available, the best choice we have found are roller shades.

A restaurant has a row of east-facing windows, and people sitting at the tables along this wall are seeing some pretty strong glare during breakfast hours. To install window film effective enough to handle the extreme direct sunlight would prevent visibility from the outside, diminishing the inviting appearance most restaurants desire. Solution: a light to medium density film on the glass for UV / heat control and a uniform exterior appearance, backed by high-density woven roller shades to be lowered or raised as needed.

A person works nights and sleeps days. Although window film will keep the room comfortable by eliminating a significant amount of heat it can not, short of total blackout film, darken the room sufficiently. Here is a case where there is a need for periodic light blockage. A total light-blocking roller shade with side and bottom channels installed on each window, when lowered would create a virtual darkroom for the night worker to enjoy a refreshing good "day‘s" sleep.

Roller shades work well with window film because they can allow even visibility (no slats or louvers), are low maintenance (few moving parts), and are available in a wide choice of colors, textures, and density of fabric weave (even transparent mylar and total light blocking). They come with your choice of manual: spring loaded or chain pull, and power operated: battery or hard-wired, with optional remote control. Other uses for roller shades include skylights, greenhouses, and exterior patio / porch applications.
